Bernardo Bertolucci nasce nel 1941 nei dintorni di Parma.
Il suo esordio nel cinema avviene come assistente alla regia nel film Accattone di Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Nel 1987 arriva la consacrazione definitiva con il colossal L'Ultimo Imperatore, pellicola che vinse ben nove Oscar.
